(The date is a warm Saturday in present day)
The sun was making people line up for cold waters and tables with shade today, because despite the heat, the show must go on. I sat in the judge's tent to judge the cross country competition for the under 18's today on my property. It was 9:15 AM, and trailers and horses were parked and ready to go. One rider had already jumped the course, scoring pretty well with only one refusal at the wagon jump. Next up was a 16 year old girl and her 14.2 hand Connemara pony. Her pony looked familiar to me. He has a short black mane, a dappled buckskin coat, four black stockings and his tail was spiked with grey hairs. "Next up, Natasha Saba on Louie Vitton." the announcer shot, and then the starting bell rang. The girl squeezed the pony's sides and he took off. They soared easily over the 2'3 log and they made their round over the birdhouse, the bridge, and over a flower box. They did a long stretch of a gallop over the grass field and they neared the jumps near the judge's booth. Louie's ears switched back and forth as Natasha squeezed his sides more, for the next jumps were the jumps that would make or break their round. Louie easily jumped the 3 foot log that fell into a sandbox, and they easily trudged through the sandbox and made their way towards the straw jump, that was at least 3'4. Everything happened in slow motion as they jumped that jump. Louie accidentally took Natasha's ques to heart and he jumped a stride early, which caused a bad landing. He easily picked himself up from the missed stride and kept galloping on, and they went on like nothing happened. Everybody clapped them on. They did the rest of their course well, popping over the 3'2 wagon jump, the hill and the water portion. The judges and I ruled in her favor and gave her a great score.
While my regular riders went onto the course and smoothed down the grass and picked up trash, I went to Natashsa's trailer. She was preparing for her showjumping round. "Hi there, you did amazing today." I told her, and she smiled. Louie turned away from Natasha and looked at me, and it hit me. He was my childhood pony! "How old is this boy here?" I asked her, and she told me he was 23 years old. I used to ride this pony while my mother was training him. "How would you like to become a regular rider here?" I asked her, hoping she would say yes and that I would be able to reunite with a big part of my childhood.
